Hereditarily non-pythagorean fields

چکیده

We prove for a large class of fields $F$ that every proper finite extension $F_{pyth}$, the pythagorean closure $F$, is not field. This contains number and are finitely generated transcendence degree at least one over some subfield $F$.

Strictly Singular Non-compact Operators on Hereditarily Indecomposable Banach Spaces

An example is given of a strictly singular non-compact operator on a Hereditarily Indecomposable, reflexive, asymptotic `1 Banach space. The construction of this operator relies on the existence of transfinite c0-spreading models in the dual of the space.

Hereditarily Non-sensitive Dynamical Systems and Linear Representations

For an arbitrary topological group G any compact G-dynamical system (G, X) can be linearly G-represented as a weak∗-compact subset of a dual Banach space V ∗. As was shown in [45] the Banach space V can be chosen to be reflexive iff the metric system (G, X) is weakly almost periodic (WAP). In this paper we study the wider class of compact G-systems which can be linearly represented as a weak∗-c...

Hereditarily Optimal Realizations

Acknowledgments Obviously, though by no means trivially, many thanks are due to my advisor Professor Vincent Moulton, for introducing me to this fascinating subject, providing inspiration and helping me get started. Many thanks also to my colleague and co-author Dr. Katharina Huber for her patience during the many hours we spent going over the proofs in this paper. I am also most grateful to my...

Hereditarily effective typestreams

We prove that the hierarchy of hereditarily effective typestreams, that are effective models of inductivly defined types, has the length of the first recursivly inaccessible ordinal.

A Non-Pythagorean Musical Scale Based on Logarithms

A new musical scale devised by the author, based on natural logarithms, is described. Most of the logarithmic pitches bear no correspondence to the twelve tones of the ancient tuning system attributed to Pythagoras, based on ratios of whole numbers, nor to the chromatic tones of scales in equal temperament used widely in the modern era. Logarithms obey a special arithmetic compared to whole and...
